Care for Country: sharing our school grounds with migratory birds
Have you noticed the plovers nesting in the grounds of our school? Sharing our school with other species pose interesting questions for us to think our more-than-human community.
Plovers come every year to Moreland Primary to nest, just as the migratory short finn eels travel to the Merri Merri (and other creeks and rivers) from the Coral Sea, we wonder about these plovers that make home in our yard…
Where do they come from?
Where are they flying next?
If they come every year, how do we make our school a more hospitable place for them to make home? Can we imagine what kind of grasses they would appreciate as habitat?
We invite you to take a time to feel their presence, and our school grounds as part of Country. Caring for plovers is a very practical way of caring for Country.
Community walk: News
This is a reminder about the Final Merri Merri Creek family walk that is happening this Sunday 15th September at 1:30pm.
The walk will start on the East side of Rushall Station in North Fitzroy on the Merri Creek path and will wind its way along the Merri Creek to its confluence with the Yarra (approx 3.1km). As with the previous walks we are inviting people to bring a small snack to share with the group at the confluence before we head back to Rushall station.
This is your final opportunity to join the walk so if you haven’t participated yet please do come along. The weather is looking perfect.
Any questions can be directed to Seth (0406361183) , Kate or Sarita in the school yard.
We look forward to seeing you on Sunday.
Next week is the last week of the 3/4 program!
We’ve had such an amazing time with 3/4s students, teachers and parents/carers learning with the Merri Merri creek and it’s not too late to join. Next week we will welcome Uncle Dave Wandin and Uncle Bill Nicholson back for more learning on Country. We are tremendously lucky to be able to spend time learning with Wurundjeri Elders so we encourage you to make time and come along.
Please remember that all parents/carers and grandparents attending the Merri Creek sessions need a Working With Children Check.
Preps getting ready!
If you are a parent/carer or grandparent of a prep student get your walking feet ready to join the fun next term. If you need help filling up your Working With Children Check application pls get in touch for help to Sarita (creekulum@gmail.com).
Slow Art Collective coming to MPS
Between the 14th-25th October we’ll have Slow Art Collective and Wurundjeri weaver Judy Nicholson in residency creating a collaborative outdoor installation in our school grounds that will stay as a place to share about our program with the wider community during our most anticipated school fete.
